ABOUT THE PLAY

Cannibals of the Heart OR Louisa Adams Writes a Play imagines that late in her life, Louisa Adams—our country’s only playwriting First Lady—decided to write a play that would be unflinchingly autobiographical—a play that that would place her mercurial marriage to John Quincy Adams and her relationship to the other members of her tragically disposed family upon a creative armature comfortably familiar to her, given her lifelong love of theater and its potential for trenchant storytelling.

PLACE AND TIME
The play takes place on the stage of the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. in late spring of 1837 shortly after Louisa Adams’ sixty-second birthday
